MGMT: Alien Days

a62f4ffcWhile you were all too busy getting stoned on April 20th, MGMT was busy releasing their first single to the public in over 3 years. “Alien Days” is the name of the song, and it is a tasty little number, I must say. For those of you who gave up on MGMT after their first album, I forgive you because if you gave up then you were never really a fan anyways. It’s like when people say, “I used to be a Leafs fan, but they’ve just let me down too many times so I switched teams.” Don’t feel bad, you were clearly never a “Leafs Fan,” so when the Leafs win the cup in 2016 and all of your friends and the other 3 million of us are running naked in the streets, experiencing the greatest night in recent history, you’ll be sitting at home, with a Sidney Crosby figurine 6 inches deep, eating mom’s Mac n’ Cheese, until finally your phone rings, but it’s just me, reminding you of that moment in your life when you gave up.

MGMT’s second studio album “Congratulations” came out in 2010, but was on my Best Albums of the Year lists for 2011 & 2012. The album was so good that no one liked it. The album was so fucking good that when you ask someone “did you like MGMT’s last album?” they respond with A. “They’re still around?” B. “Was there a second album?” C. “I think I’d recognize some names if you read them off to me.” I then say, “Flash delirium? Brian Eno? Congratulations?” They respond, “K, nevermind.” It baffled me for the longest time why no one listened to “Congratulations,” but I think the answer is simple: MGMT wanted a loyal fan base. They wanted fans who like ALL of their songs. Congratulations is definitely more like the second half of Oracular Spectacular, but is also nothing like it. I can completely understand if people wanted MGMT’s second album to sound more like “Kids,” “Time to Pretend,” or “Electric Feel” because those were the songs that most people knew them by, but if that was the way you thought and were not open to an entirely new sound and experiments then MGMT succeeded in ridding your ungrateful ass.

When MGMT releases their self-titled third studio album next month brace yourself for an even more in-depth analysis on Congratulations because I will be searching for comparisons and anti-comparisons. Whatever that means, just wait a freakin’ month, OK?

As I’m writing this post it has come to my attention that MGMT released a second single, a mere 2 days ago called “Something To Do with Prince?” But the Mother Fuckers did not release it online yet. Goddamn it, I respect you guys. The next hour of my life shall be an adventure in the streets of Toronto in search of this vinyl copy!! After this post, of course. For now, let me briefly describe my enjoyment of their last single, “Alien Days.” It was rumoured that MGMT was not going to have the same ‘freedom’ on their third album as they did on their second one because of the poor reception on Congratulations (so yeh, thanks to all you queefbags who went hog-wild on their first album then pussied out on their second. This is your fault, and forgiveness shall only be met if you can explain to me why you only listened to the first album. And it probably still won’t be met because if you make an amazing point I will probably loose my effing mind). All I had to do was read one quote by Andrew VanWyngarden (lead singer/guitarist) on Alien Days to understand that the studio will probably never be able to take over the sound of MGMT. He said the song was about, “a parasitic alien is in your head, controlling things” — not going to lie, I just got this quote off of Wikipedia. If you’re not cool with that as a source then look up where the quote actually came from (there is a link on Wikipedia) and see if the meaning/wording changed at all on Wikipedia. VanWyngarden, as glimpsed in this quote, and seen in many interviews articles is clearly a little nuts. This is a good thing by the way. It’s a compliment. Being nuts has negative associations because most nutbags are either living on sidewalks above the rising heat from manholes, or are literally tucked comfortably under the manhole in your pants (nutbags). Being a little crazy is what creates an amazing artist, and that’s exactly what the members of MGMT are.

Once again, I have literally wrote 672 words up to this point and have probably said 2 sentences worth of review on their new single, Alien Days. But yeh, no one can make you listen to a song, or see a movie, or do anything really, it’s when you yourself truly want to do something and get something done that you will fully accept and appreciate something. And that’s what I want for MGMT: a true, loyal, and understanding fan base that accepts MGMT for every thing they create. So in conclusion, I really, really liked Alien Days. I think it shows a lot more of their major sound influences (i.e. Beck, David Bowie, REM, etc.) then they have shown us before. It’s almost like a homage to the groups that have created who they are. I would not expect the entire album to sound like this, because it usually never does. Oracular Spectacular did not only sound like “Time to Pretend,” and Congratulations did not only sound like “Flash Delirium.” Their albums are never short on variety and experiments; they want to create something, and fucking eh, they do it.
